After reading the Standard-Examiner's July 12 news story, "Hot-tub accuser dead," I was prompted to write this letter. Former Utah Republican majority leader, Kevin Garn continues to walk free without paying a legal penalty for what he did to Cheryl Maher, a 15-year-old teenager when he was in his 30s, married, her employer, her Mormon bishop and her Sunday school teacher.
Any other state would have declared him a sexual pedophile and put him behind bars. He is lucky to live in Utah where being a leader in the Republican Party and a buddy of the most influential leaders in our state gives him a free pass. The acts he committed are so despicable that there should be a huge clamor to bring him to justice. He claims to have gone hot tubbing in the nude without sex (hard to believe). He then paid Cheryl $150,000 dollars in hush money while he lied and got elected to one of the highest offices in the state.
When he resigned over this issue, our legislative leaders, without a moral compass, gave him a standing ovation. Then our state press leaders did not pursue this story until he was prosecuted. Our gutless attorney general, a buddy of Garn, said he saw no criminal wrong doing on Garn's part. Our congressional leaders stayed silent and hid behind "all are considered innocent until found guilty." Is Garn heaving a sigh of relief that his chief accuser is dead?
My fervent hope is that the Utah press continues to pursue this story and influences national investigative organizations of repute, such as CBS news' "60 Minutes," to bring this individual to justice. I for one, will be definitely writing to them.
