Inmate wants to donate kidney, eye 'to do some good'

TILLERY, N.C. -- When he was 20, Dalton Windley fetched a .22-caliber rifle from his car, aimed it from the hip and fired a single shot at Glenn Brame from about 150 yards, catching the young man in the neck.

They'd been arguing over a girl. Windley knows it doesn't matter, but he insists he didn't mean to kill. Those few seconds of wildness got him a life sentence in prison and, after nearly 20 years, he doesn't expect to get out.

US tops 100M organ donors; Utah over 1 million

SALT LAKE CITY - One hundred million people in the United States are now reported as registered organ, eye and tissue donors on their driver license, state issued ID card or by registering online.

This equals approximately 42 percent of the adult population of the U.S. This milestone is a testament to our human nature and our willingness to work together for the greater good.

Utah has consistently had one of the highest donor registration rates in the nation.

CINCINNATI -- Carolyn Henry Glaspy stocked shelves and helped unload a truck during her shift Tuesday at a Family Dollar Store.

On Wednesday morning she took a flight to Tampa, Fla., where she sat for TV interviews that afternoon and was a featured speaker Thursday at the 19th annual national convention of the Association of Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation. The Richmond, Va.-based organization works to increase organ donation among African-Americans and other minority groups.

Family stays upbeat despite multiple medical problems

SMITHFIELD -- Jeff Norman laughs when he suggests that his family sounds like a soap opera. But instead of complaining about the medical issues that have come in handfuls at a time, the Normans just accept those trials as part of life and look for the good in the difficult experiences.

"We just feel everyone gets picked on, so there's no reason to get mad," Norman said. "There's no sense in feeling sorry for yourself."

After one Marine dies, his kidney saves another

SAN DIEGO -- A 23-year-old Iraq war veteran received a kidney this month in San Diego from a fellow Marine left brain-dead after a training accident, squeezing what is normally a five-year wait into two days.

The fast-paced transplant underscores the deep bond among service members and their families, according to friends and relatives. As Sgt. Jacob Chadwick prepared to leave the hospital Aug. 11, hundreds of police cars and motorcycles escorted 2nd Lt. Patrick Wayland's casket through his hometown of Midland, Texas, where thousands lined the streets waving American flags.

Surviving and thriving: After surgeries and close calls, Bountiful woman is upbeat

BOUNTIFUL -- Mary Rizzuto has cheated death more than once in her 56 years.

When she was a young girl living in Wyoming, she survived a severe bout of rheumatic fever that damaged her heart valves. At the age of 23 she had her first surgery to replace one of the damaged valves. When that valve began to fail, another surgery to replace it nearly killed her.

Utah donor registry honored

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah was recently honored in Dallas, Texas with a gold medal for the superior performance of its donor registry.

Dr. David Sundwall, MD, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Health will be presenting this award to the Utah Driver License Division to show appreciation for their professionalism and support. The presentation of the award will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 9:30 am, Utah Department of Health Cannon Building, 288 N. 1460 W., Room 128.

A Nov. 22, 2010 photo released by the New York City Fire Department, shows the FDNY's Organ Preservation Unit. As part of a new six month pilot program, the vehicle will be staffed with personnel trained to get a donor family's consent, perform medical procedures necessary to keep the donor organ viable, as well as transport the donor to the hospital to harvest the organs for transplant. If someone dies at home, the team will have roughly 20 minutes to start preservation procedures.

Program expands organ recovery to at-home deaths

NEW YORK -- Families choosing whether to donate a loved one's organs usually have days to grapple with their decision, all while the patient lies hooked up to machines in a hospital bed.

But they would have only about 20 minutes to make the choice in a new pilot program meant to recover organs from patients who die at home.

That's roughly how long a team of organ specialists will have after a cardiac-arrest patient is declared dead to arrive at the home, check a donor registry, determine medical eligibility, obtain a family member's consent and get the person into a specialized ambulance.

The program launching Wednesday -- the first of its kind in the U.S., according to organizers and other experts -- could eventually lead to thousands more organs donated each year nationwide. But the six-month trial, a collaboration between Bellevue Hospital and New York City's police and fire departments, could be declared a success without a single organ being recovered, organizers say.
