Game warden’s job no mere walk in the woods

The events of the past week -- with Mississippi game wardens being the ones who finally found murder/kidnapping suspect Adam Mayes in the woods -- remind us once again that being a conservation officer -- a game warden -- is a far different endeavor than some people like to believe.

Two Ogden men almost on top of the world

OGDEN — In the face of high winds, falling rocks and an enormous avalanche, two Ogden men are on their way to the top of Mt. Everest.

Friends Will Calton and Tom Burton, both 50, both of Ogden, make up half of a team climbing the Earth’s highest mountain. Team leader Jeff Reynolds, of Santa Fe, N.M., and fellow climber Rob Cassady, from Colorado, make four.

Young Subaru celebrates new South Ogden location today

SOUTH OGDEN — Most people would rather not have neighbors that pack their driveway with cars morning, noon and night.

That is, unless the neighbor is a new car dealership ready to deliver an economic shot in the arm for a Weber County city.

“A new car dealership in a small community adds tax revenue, which is something any city would want,” said South Ogden Mayor James Minster. “It’s just a good business to have in a community.”

Repairs close scenic roads in Farmington, Huntsville

FARMINGTON — Scenic nature drives might be hard to come by in the Top of Utah this summer.

U.S. Forest Service officials say Farmington Canyon Road will not be open until at least late fall, and Weber County officials say Old Snowbasin Road will remain closed for the immediate future.

The Sockeye, a United States Coast Guard vessel backs away from Yerba Buena Island after refueling and heads back out to sea to search for four people missing off the Farallon Islands on Sunday, April 15, 2012, in San Francisco, Calif. One person died and four others remain missing after a 38-foot yacht ran aground while racing near the Farallon Islands on Saturday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Two people were rescued from the rocks and a third from the water after the sailboat Low Speed Chase wrecked about 3 p.m. while competing in the Full Crew Farallons Race, a 58-nautical-mile contest starting and ending at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Chris Hanzlik said. The race circles the Farallon Islands, a rocky, uninhabited set of islands 27 miles outside the Golden Gate. (AP Photo/The Contra Costa Times, Susan Tripp Pollard)

Lost sailors were adventurous, experienced

SAN FRANCISCO -- The crew of the Low Speed Chase was a relaxed but adventurous cadre of expert sailors who were fixtures on the Marin County waterfront, friends and family say.

For five of them, the toughest race in local yachting circles -- the Full Crew Farallones Race, held annually since 1907 -- was their last. A towering wave washed them overboard Saturday afternoon as their boat rounded the islands, and rescue efforts by three crew members who survived the disaster were dashed by another wall of water that wrecked the sailboat.

Biologists keep an eye on walleyes

DULUTH, Minn. -- The tail of the huge mama walleye broke the surface of the water, flexing slowly, side to side. It was a massive tail, as wide as a handspan. Soon it would be fanning the tannin-stained water of the St. Louis River over a patch of gravel as she deposited her payload of eggs.

But not today.
