Idaho man dies in avalanche

CASCADE, Idaho -- Valley County authorities say a man from Payette was killed in an avalanche near Rock Lake.

Twenty-four-year-old Joel Barrie was riding with several other snowmobilers Thursday afternoon when he was apparently caught in an avalanche that buried him and another rider.

The other rider was found and dug out of the snow within a few minutes and had no life-threatening injuries. But officials say Barrie was buried in about 5 feet of snow with the snowmobile on top of him. His body was found about 45 minutes after the avalanche.
