FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A U.S. Magistrate in Flagstaff has banned a St. George, Utah, man from Grand Canyon National Park after he used an inflatable kayak on the Colorado River without a permit.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says 24-year-old Dean Woods Jr. is banned from Grand Canyon for three years while he is on probation. Prosecutors say Woods pleaded guilty to conducting a river trip without a permit.
National Park Service investigators say that last July, Woods hiked into the Canyon packing an inflatable kayak.
The Arizona Daily Sun reports rangers found Woods on the river bank with his kayak. The paper says Woods told investigators he knew a permit was required to kayak the Colorado River.
A call to Woods has not been returned.
