"We were ready to play. Our guys came out with a lot of emotion and energy in that first series and battled hard the entire way," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. But Matt Barkley passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns, including an 83-yarder to Marqise Lee in the fourth quarter, and No. 13 Southern California came back from a two-touchdown deficit to beat Utah 38-28 Thursday night.

SALT LAKE CITY -- As a kid, Brian Johnson was so inquisitive he read the warning label inside his football helmet and nearly quit the game.

Nearly 20 years later that thirst for knowledge is serving him well instead as he embarks on his first season as Utah's offensive coordinator -- according to the Utes, the youngest at the FBS level.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Aside from the University of Southern California's Matt Barkley and the University of Washington's Keith Price, the quarterback position is largely unknowable in the Pac-12. Other teams, such as the University of California, have returning quarterbacks, but they also have long, loping question marks.
