Davis High marching band to perform in Tournament of Roses Parade

KAYSVILLE — Tournament of Roses President Sally Bixby visited Davis High School on Saturday to present the school’s marching band with an official invitation to perform in the 2013 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

Bixby presented band members with the official flag of the Tournament of Roses Parade and praised their efforts in becoming such an accomplished marching band.

Time to sign up for North Ogden's Cherry Days

NORTH OGDEN — Patrons can now sign up to rent a Cherry Days booth or enter the parade. The deadline is June 1, after which a late fee will be assessed.

Booth fees are $60 or $100 if the city provides the canopy. An additional $10 is assessed to run electricity.

Parade fees are $20 for general entries, $15 for North Ogden businesses and $10 for schools.

St. Louis hosting first big parade on Iraq War’s end

ST. LOUIS — Looking around at the tens of thousands of people waving American flags and cheering, Army Maj. Rich Radford was moved that so many braved a cold January wind Saturday in St. Louis to honor people like him: Iraq War veterans.

The parade, borne out of a simple conversation between two St. Louis friends a month ago, was the nation’s first big welcome-home for veterans of the war since the last troops were withdrawn from Iraq in December.

OGDEN -- He is not a veteran, but Trae Kelley stood tall and marched proudly near the front of Saturday's Veterans Day Parade. The whole time, as the veterans received cheers from those on the sides of the street, the 18-year-old thought of his grandfather.

"Even today at my work, people are still talking about it," Paula Sever, Ogden Pioneer Days parade committee member, said Tuesday of the float that featured enthusiastic musicians playing violins and banjos.

Firefighter pops the question during Clearfield parade

CLEARFIELD — Spencer Gallegos was starting to feel light-headed as his nerves increased in anticipation of his planned, public marriage proposal.

Gallegos, a 22-year-old firefighter with the North Davis Fire District, spent months trying to decide how to propose to his 21-year-old girlfriend Brittany Craven. Those deliberations led him to the Fourth of July parade in Clearfield.

The parade started at 9:30 a.m. At first, he was walking alongside the large, red fire truck waiting until they approached the spot where his parents and Brittany were sitting.

Organizers improving rodeo, adding more events to Pioneer Days

OGDEN -- If you thought advertising for Ogden Pioneer Days this year has touted events on more days than in years past, you're right.

The expanded calendar, starting July 1 instead of the usual July 19 or 20, represented an emphasis on including official events leading up to the rodeo as part of the celebration.

"We just made it more of an overall experience," said Ogden Pioneer Heritage Foundation Chairman Brad Galvez.

Parade slated for Monday in Ogden

OGDEN -- The thunder of F-16 fighter jets will start off Ogden Pioneer Days Parade.

The parade with about 125 entries starts at 9 a.m. Monday and runs from 31st Street to 20th Street on Washington Boulevard.
