Utah battle against youth tobacco use continues despite improvements

The U.S. Surgeon General is urging states to discourage kids from smoking by implementing tobacco tax hikes, high-impact interventions, smoking bans and mass media campaigns.

Each day, nearly 4,000 kids try their first cigarette and an additional 1,000 under the age of 18 become daily users, according to a report issued this week by the Office of the Surgeon General. About 3.6 million middle and high school students smoke, the report states.

MORGAN -- The results of a survey revealing where teens are consuming alcohol in this rural community are raising eyebrows and big concerns.

Although the number of respondents is small and officials lack consistent data, a Weber Human Services representative said she is concerned because the survey revealed some of the shocking conditions in which teens illegally drink in Morgan County.

Online calculators help parents, students estimate college costs

Students applying to college this fall have a new tool to help them compare costs at various campuses. This month, so-called "net price calculators" will appear on the websites of colleges nationwide, giving students and parents an idea of how much financial aid they could receive months before a formal offer arrives.

Empty-nest parents embrace new possibilities

Sitting at his youngest daughter's high school graduation, Bruce Katzen fought back the sting in his eyes. His thoughts raced from "Oh, my God, my baby is graduating," to "This is going to be an exciting time for my wife and me."

"It's a milestone," Katzen said.

This month, parents of more than 3 million high school graduates are celebrating the transition to the next phase of their children's lives. But where generations past fretted over the empty nest and the prospect of loneliness, today's empty-nesters are active in the workforce and see the transition as opportunity for better work-life balance and new routines.
