Davis County Gala will support Utah's first 'unlimited play park'

FARMINGTON — A “wild” jungle theme is in place for this year’s annual Davis County Gala, and it’s expected that proceeds from the event will go a long way toward the development of Utah’s first fully accessible “unlimited play park” for children with special needs.

The annual black-tie affair, to be held the evening of Sept. 6 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton, will feature the African Children’s Choir, with all proceeds going to Chloe’s Sunshine Playground in Centennial Park in Syracuse.

The 5-acre park, to be developed around 1979 S. 1900 West, behind the Syracuse police station, is being billed by officials as meeting the state’s strict criteria for being its first unlimited play park.

Carved bears court wedding proposals at MTC Park

OGDEN — An addition to the MTC Park in Ogden is a cute attraction as well as a monument to the volunteers who serve there each week.

A carved female and a male bear, facing each other with a bench between them, are adorned with the words “Love Hill” encased in a heart and the instructions “propose here.” Both bears have the wide eyes of those contemplating marriage.

“I thought because they are posing for pictures all the time and weddings, something romantic would fit in,” said Dennis Miller, who carved the bears and made the bench between them, then built steps up the hill to the creation.

Development plans also include an on-the-water fuel dock and pump, and each lake is projected to accommodate almost any water sport, including a regulation American Waterski Association slalom course.

Pleasant View councilman opposes giving park land to fire district

PLEASANT VIEW -- Some council members and Mayor Doug Clifford would like to see one acre of land in Wadman Nature Park go to the North View Fire District.

The council recently discussed plans to work out a sale for $1 or a possible trade for a road the fire district would be responsible for installing that would run from east to west.

The acre of property and the rest of Wadman Nature Park was donated to the city by the Wadman family. Councilman Todd Walker, whose term ends Jan. 1, voiced strong opposition to the plan.
