Man critical after being hit by SUV

BOUNTIFUL -- A 49-year-old man was critically injured Thursday when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle.

Steven Manning appeared to have walked out onto Orchard Drive in Bountiful around 7:15 p.m., intending to cross from the north side of the residential street to the south side, said Bountiful Police Sgt. Gary Koehn. But as he stepped out into the street near 300 West, a woman in an SUV hit him, Koehn said.

Sun blamed in Tremonton auto-ped accident

LAYTON — “If you build it, they will come.”

Not only is that one of the most-quoted lines in one of Hollywood’s favorite baseball movies, “Field of Dreams,” but the saying also describes Gabe Garn’s feelings about a potential concrete walkway trail system that would create a shorter, more pedestrian-friendly path between the Davis Conference Center and the hotels surrounding it.

“I sincerely believe this is the same thing,” said Garn, general manager at the Home2Suites in Layton. “Once we build it and create an atmosphere, we will get larger groups staying with us.”

LAYTON — The shortest distance between visitors and the dollars they spend in Layton is a straight path from the area hotels there, to the Davis Conference Center.

Man hit by car in Ogden, critically injured

OGDEN -- A man in his early 20s was in critical condition Monday night after being hit by a car at 3850 Harrison Blvd.

Ogden Duty Lt. Danielle Croyle said the man was walking north toward oncoming traffic in the outside lane of Harrison Boulevard when he was hit. She said there was no indication that the driver of the vehicle that hit him was speeding.

The man, in critical condition, was taken by ambulance to McKay-Dee Hospital.

Boy hit by car in Ogden may have broken leg

OGDEN — An 11-year-old boy went to McKay-Dee Hospital with a possible broken leg after being hit in a crosswalk on the way to school around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver was an 18-year-old male driving alone on a learner’s permit when he hit the child at Canfield Drive and Lockwood Drive, said Police Lt. Danielle Croyle.

Police cited the driver for failure to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

No jail time for driver who killed pedestrian

FARMINGTON — A man who hit and killed a pedestrian with his car while he was reading a text message behind the wheel will not serve any jail time, as long as he honors his probation.

Thursday morning, Craig Moyes, 20, of Layton, appeared in 2nd District Court and was sentenced to serve 240 hours of community service and to pay a $375 fine.

Pedestrian hit, killed by UTA train

WEST JORDAN -- Authorities say a pedestrian has been struck and killed by a train.

Police say the woman was crossing the tracks at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred on Utah Transit Authority tracks in West Jordan while a train was testing the line. The new section is scheduled to officially open in August.

SOUTH OGDEN -- Ray "Rusty" Underwood brightened the school year for thousands of drivers, waving to cars as they whizzed by on U.S. 89 in South Ogden each morning.

But his gestures stopped a couple of weeks ago, leaving his motoring friends wondering why.

Underwood has been keeping his hands in his pockets lately because he said he was told by his supervisor to stop waving.

UDOT to upgrade crosswalks for the disabled

LAYTON -- Main Street in Layton and Clearfield soon should be easier to traverse for those with vision problems and other disabilities.

Utah Department of Transportation crews have begun work on a project to make crosswalks in Layton and Clearfield compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
