This is an animal heart infested with heartworms, a potentially fatal disease. Area veterinarians urge pet owners to give heartworm prevention medication to dogs and cats because the treatment medication is extremely scarce. Currently, the only treatment medication is being shipped from the United Kingdom and has not been approved by the FDA. (Contributed photo)

Prevent heartworms in pets because treatment is scarce, vets warn

If you haven’t been administering medications that will protect your dog from heartworms, now would be a good time to start.

The spread of heartworms — described by area veterinarians as a horrible disease — is more likely in the summer, as mosquitoes are known to pass it from dog to dog.

And should your dog get heartworms, the animal is now less likely to receive the treatment it needs to survive the potentially fatal disease.

Transports help 'no-kill' communities save dogs, cats

Toby had issues. The 4-year-old chow's owners had dispatched him to the municipal shelter in Virginia's King George County for being aggressive with their children. He had skin allergies and wouldn't let anyone near him. Prospects for adoption seemed grim.

But after a few weeks, Toby made friends -- first with one attendant, then with the rest of the shelter staff and King George Animal Rescue League volunteers.

Who will care for pets after owner dies?

It might be a good idea to pay more attention to Mom and Dad's beloved pooch or finicky feline.

A growing trend in probate law has pet owners setting aside some -- if not all -- of their estates for the care of their beloved pets.

Mohr says she can't forgive Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney for making his dog ride on top of the car during a 1983 family trip to Canada. Mommy Wars give way to Doggy Wars in Twitterverse

NEW YORK -- So let's get all the puns out of the way, shall we? It's the issue with legs -- four of them. The doggone thing won't go away. Has the presidential race just gone to the dogs? Or are we simply in those dog days between the primary season and the start of the general election?

Whatever it is, the political Mommy Wars seem to have given way this week, at least temporarily, to the Doggy Wars, with an effort by supporters of both Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama to gain points with the Doggy Vote. That's dog owners, not the dogs themselves -- at least for now.

Pets of the week

Watson

Watson is a 1- to 2-year-old Chihuahua mix. He is a tray that no one claimed. It's unsure whether he's house broken or not but he likes other small dogs and likes kids. Watson is a friendly little dog with a lovable personality. He likes to jump up on people's legs until he's picked up, and them he will cover one's face with slobbery kisses. He likes to go for walks and will prance around proudly by people's sides. Watson will be neutered, micro chipped and vaccinated.

Some stores, workplaces becoming more pet friendly

DETROIT -- Partridge Creek mall store owners enjoy its dog-friendly policy almost as much as the dog owners who shop there.

"People really enjoy it, it brings more customers in," said Cory Hardy of Bears & Buddies, who often takes his two dogs, a Chihuahua and a puggle, to work with him at the Clinton Township, Mich., establishment.

Today, dogs are welcome at places that were off limits to pets just a few years ago. No one is keeping track of the number of dog-friendly employers, but taking Fido to work and elsewhere appears to be a growing trend.

Chickens

Pet store owner to adopt out chickens

MADISON, Wis. -- Though she probably wouldn't mention this on her business card, Liz Perry is a chicken matchmaker.

One of the few, if only, people performing the worthy service in southern Wisconsin, Perry helps unwanted chickens find new homes -- homes where they will be egg-producing pets and not end up in a casserole dish.

As the number of urban chickens taking roost in cities and suburbs explodes, Perry -- who owns two pet stores in Madison -- has become the go-to foster mother for unwanted birds. She figures she's found homes for as many as 250 chickens in the last few years. She doesn't have a website nor does she advertise her urban chicken rescue services, but people find her anyway, often by posting questions on the website madcitychickens.com.

American crocodile

Crocodiles becoming a bigger threat to people, pets

MIAMI -- Fishing in a canal outside Homestead Bayfront Park not long ago, Ed Castleberry fought hard to catch the biggest jack he'd ever hooked. But something else also wanted his 15-pound trophy, something lurking beneath the murky surface.

Pets of the week

Jake

Jake is a 5-year-old German Shorthair Pointer. He was signed over by his previous owner because Jake kept getting out of the yard. Jake is house broken, likes other dogs, doesn't like cats and is great with kids of all ages. Jake is a smart and high energy dog that needs to be exercised and played with regularly. He needs to go to a home or family that is active and will match his personality. Jake is in kennel old adopt 13.
