McIlroy: Now I know I'm the best

VIRGINIA WATER, England -- Winning the U.S. Open last year didn't just earn Rory McIlroy his first major title, it made him believe he was ready to become the best player in the world.

McIlroy justified his long-held reputation as golf's new star and possible heir to Tiger Woods by rolling to an eight-shot victory at Congressional last June.

Casey Martin a long shot, but at least has a shot for U.S. Open

SAN FRANCISCO -- Fourteen years after he maneuvered along the Olympic Club's sloping fairways, we can safely say this about Casey Martin's crusade to use a golf cart in competition: It did not send the game spiraling into disarray. Not even close.

Nicklaus-Palmer battle at Oakmont topic of documentary

PITTSBURGH -- Jack Nicklaus was so focused on winning his first professional golf tournament, especially one as important as the U.S. Open, that he wasn't aware of everything going on around him.

Facing Arnold Palmer in an 18-hole playoff at Oakmont Country Club in 1962, the then-22-year-old prodigy from Columbus, Ohio, had no idea that the crowd was so against him that his dad had to be restrained by none other than Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes from going after antagonists in the gallery.

Woods' boorish behavior wears thin

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Tiger Woods' latest temper tantrum did not go over well with some fans at the Masters.

Woods caused a scene with his boorish behavior at buttoned-down Augusta National on Friday, scowling, cursing, tossing clubs. He even went so far as to give one a swift kick after his shot on the 16th tee landed in the bunker.

"It's not what you want to see," said Charles Hatcher III, who was at the course on Saturday with his 11-year-old son, Charles IV, and his father, Charles Sr. "Golf is a gentleman's game, and you should treat it as such."

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Phil Mickelson raised the putter in his right hand and slammed down his left fist to celebrate a 20-foot eagle putt that shook Augusta National with the loudest roar on a day filled with them.

The 34-year-old Swede, playing in only his second Masters, answered by making four birdies over the last five holes for a 7-under 65, the lowest score of the tournament, to take a one-shot lead into the final round.
