Enjoy taking photographs? Give Instagram a whirl

Instagram isn't just for hipsters. The iPhone-only photo app is getting ready to take off in a big way, and you might enjoy giving it a try -- even if your kids, like my daughter, say it's really only for people under the age of 25.

You will be happy to know you can take pictures of any federal building in the nation, including in Utah, as long as you are standing on a public street, sidewalk or other public place.

Taking pictures and making nature videos are fun family activities

DETROIT -- If you want to have fun with kids, set up a bird feeder squirrels can't reach easily, maybe forcing them to climb a thin pole or hang from an overhead support to get at the food.

Then set up a digital camera that makes high-definition video. If you use a tripod you'll get better results, but there are times when hand-holding the camera produces interesting angles.

The movie makes a great offering for show-and-tell days at school, and if you combine it with a still-picture slide show of other animals that visit you'll have a mini-epic nature drama that you can even set to music.

And if you want a project that will really impress teachers and friends, make video on the same day of each month from now until school lets out and title it something like "A Season in our Backyard."

Photojournalists have different focus at Ogden parade

There is a subtle difference between photojournalism and the personal pictures you and I might take.

With photojournalism, the image is intended to tell a story. With personal photos, the image is meant to preserve a moment.

Ogden district students explore nature and more in summer program

OGDEN -- Emily Dabb carefully turned the pages of her science journal Wednesday afternoon at the MTC Learning Park. The 11-year-old had spent the morning at the park with two of her friends, exploring nature with a camera in one hand and a journal in the other to record what she saw.

Emily was participating in the first-ever Ogden School District Summer Scholars program. The program was launched this year by teachers working to get their gifted and talented endorsement through Weber State University.

Using just one eye, photographer shares visions

OGDEN -- Nathan Caulford doesn't remember the exact age or moment when he realized he was different from other children, but he does remember kids staring and pointing at him in the grocery store.

Caulford was born with a large, dark hemangioma that covered the right side of his face. Severe glaucoma on that side required the removal of his right eye.

According to the Vascular Birthmark Foundation website, www.birthmark.org, a hemangioma is a cluster of veins usually found on the head and neck area. Caulford's is a compound hemangioma, meaning the vein cluster is both superficial and deep.
