Pileups

Debris and wreckage lie along the highway after a multi-vehicle accident that killed at least nine people, on Interstate 75 near Gainesville, Fla., Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012. Authorities were still trying to determine what caused the pileup on the highway, which had been closed for a time because of the mixture of fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire. Cause sought for deadly highway pileup

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Authorities in Florida were trying to determine Monday what caused the horrific pileup on Interstate 75 south of Gainesville, where a long line of cars and trucks collided one after another on a dark highway so shrouded in haze and smoke that drivers were blinded.

At approximately 3:13 a "Conway" Semi truck pulling a single trailer was struck by a red Peter built Semi pulling an empty tanker trailer after it jack knifed and hit the slower moving Conway trailer. Both trucks were either in or near the emergency lane when a "CRST" semi pulling a box trailer lost control and jack knifed sliding into the tanker truck. The driver of the Conway truck is a 34 year old male from SLC, Ut and was transported to the Hospital with facial and head injuries. The 67 year old female driver of the tanker truck along with her 59 year old husband who had been in the sleeper were transported to the hospital.
