This year, Union Pacific celebrates 150 years since President Abraham Lincoln signed it into existence. The story of the railroad company is tied closely to the modernization of the American West. People and freight began using the railroad to travel across the country 150 years ago and continue to do so to this day.

Ogden's Carl Hodson is a true pioneer

OGDEN -- Carl Hodson's pioneer roots made him haul the last loads of sugar beets from his farm off of 12th Street in Ogden to the refinery with a horse and wagon.

It was 1951, so tractors were all over, and he had a big load, too.

But, still, "I hauled 350 tons of sugar beets with a team of horses and a wagon," he said last week.

Organizers improving rodeo, adding more events to Pioneer Days

OGDEN -- If you thought advertising for Ogden Pioneer Days this year has touted events on more days than in years past, you're right.

The expanded calendar, starting July 1 instead of the usual July 19 or 20, represented an emphasis on including official events leading up to the rodeo as part of the celebration.

"We just made it more of an overall experience," said Ogden Pioneer Heritage Foundation Chairman Brad Galvez.
