EU carries out first air strikes on Somali pirates

BRUSSELS -- The European Union naval force patrolling the Indian Ocean on Tuesday carried out its first air strikes against pirate targets on shore, with a pirate reporting that the raid destroyed speed boats, fuel depots and an arms store.

Founding Fathers patriots or pirates?

Thoughts of studying the Founding Fathers might conjure up images of stuffy men in powdered wigs drafting scholarly documents rather than rogue pirates sporting eye patches and engaging in sword fights.

But Lynnda Wangsgard, director of the Weber County Library System, saw a connection between the roots of democracy and the pirate code -- which was a more democratic system than most might suppose.

"Many of the stereotypes are not true. The way (pirates) ran things is probably a big surprise to most," Wangsgard said.

Arrrrr! Student 'pirates' get wet on field day

SYRACUSE -- Thursday was a great day for Logan Heinze.

The third-grader walked into the Bluff Ridge Elementary School office with a friend and said, "I can't wait until field day."

A few minutes later, activities filled the playground behind the school.

It's official: Ship found off N.C. coast was Blackbeard's

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina has quietly decided that the cannon-laden shipwreck just off Fort Macon is absolutely that of Blackbeard the pirate's flagship, the "Queen Anne's Revenge," ending 15 years of official uncertainty.

Archaeologists plan to raise anchor from Blackbeard's flagship

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Archaeologists plan to raise one of Blackbeard's anchors one last time Friday, yanking one huge pirate artifact from the sea floor in hopes of getting at some of the tiniest.

By chance, the operation to lift the largest artifact yet recovered from the wreck of the notorious pirate's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, comes just in time to draw attention to a new exhibit about the ship scheduled to open in two weeks at the nearby state maritime museum in Beaufort.

And in a kind of springtime buccaneer trifecta, Blackbeard and his ship appear in the latest installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie franchise, which just opened.

The Utah SECURE Strike Force made numerous arrests in Ogden and Salt Lake City in connection with pirated movies and music.

8 arrested for DVD, CD piracy

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah strike force that targets crimes by undocumented immigrants has made what they are calling the biggest bust of pirated movies and music in state history.

Agents arrested six people in Ogden on Thursday morning in connection to pirating movies and music. The next day, they arrested two more people they suspect are connected to distributing pirated media out of a Salt Lake City produce warehouse.

Risky SKorean raid saves entire crew from pirates

SEOUL, South Korea -- At dawn, South Korean special forces packed into a small boat approached a hijacked freighter in the Arabian Sea. Commandos scrambled up a ladder onto the ship, aboard which Somali pirates were armed with AK assault rifles and anti-tank missiles. A South Korean destroyer and hovering Lynx helicopter provided covering fire.

When Friday's operation ended five hours later, 21 hostages had been rescued, eight Somali pirates killed and five assailants captured. Pockmarks from artillery fire blanketed the ship's bridge. One of the hostages was wounded, but all were alive -- a remarkable ending for a risky rescue. Only a handful of rescues in recent years have involved such peril to the crew.
