Multiple agencies work together to end chase of robbery suspect

KAYSVILLE — A Davis County sheriff’s deputy is on paid administrative leave following the fatal shooting of Brett Max Knight, 33, who led police from multiple agencies on a high-speed chase Monday along Interstate 15.

Three Utah County sheriff’s deputies also were involved in the shooting and are on paid administrative leave, said Dwayne Baird, spokesman for the state’s Department of Public Safety.

Baird does not know which officer actually shot Knight, who had a handgun and was believed to be involved in a bank robbery in Draper. It is protocol for officers directly involved in a shooting to be put on paid administrative leave.

CENTERVILLE — The woman who died in a crash on Interstate 15 Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, night has been identified as Maria Herrera, 18, of Layton, Utah Highway Patrol officials said. Herrera was driving a 2003 Subaru Legacy going north on I-15 when she failed to slow down for stopped traffic near Centerville at 8:19 p.m., said UHP Corporal Todd Johnson. Northbound traffic on 1-15 was closed in Farmington due to a officer shooting of Brett Max Knight, 33, who led police in a chase from Lehi to Kaysville. Knight was killed in the shooting. Herrera entered the left emergency lane, lost control of the Subaru, slid sideways across two lanes before hitting the right rear corner of a nearly stopped Hyundai passenger car. She then continued into the next lane and crashed into the rear of a stopped semi-truck. She continued into the right shoulder and was ejected out of the driver’s door. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, officers said. No one else was seriously injured. (Photos courtesy of Utah Highway Patrol)

Updated: Chase of robbery suspect ends in shooting on I-15 in Kaysville

KAYSVILLE — Officials say a man who died Monday after being shot by police was the suspect in a Friday armed robbery in Draper.

Bina McCowan remembers her son, Philemon "Bob" Ellis, 62, at her home Tuesday, December 13, 2005, in Ogden. Ellis and Jessica Nelson, 21, who was driving, were both killed when a vehicle broadsided them at the intersection of 24th Street and Grant Avenue in Ogden. Attorneys in Nelson's case are now seeking to have Ogden's attorneys removed because one of them was chastised by the Utah Supreme Court for "bludgeoning the character of the dead" by implying Nelson was a prostitute. Nelson and Ellis were killed when a car driven by a man who had been fleeing police broadsided them. That man is now in prison. (NICK SHORT/Standard-Examiner)

Plaintiffs: Kick Ogden's attorneys off 2005 fatal-crash case

OGDEN — The nearly seven years of litigation over a fatal car crash that followed a police chase continues with plaintiffs seeking to have Ogden city’s lawyers kicked off the case.

A faulty line of questioning by the city’s hired lawyers during a November 2009 trial caused the Utah Supreme Court last June to throw out the jury verdict that had acquitted the city.

The justices ordered a new wrongful death trial in the 2005 crash in which two people died.

Morgan officer who shot woman won't be prosecuted

LAYTON — Although a Morgan County deputy’s shooting of a female motorist in November appears to have been unjustified, the officer won’t be prosecuted, Davis County Attorney Troy S. Rawlings said Tuesday.
