SALT LAKE CITY — Four months after she narrowly lost a Utah congressional race to Democrat Jim Matheson, Republican Mia Love says she is “seriously looking” at another run for the seat.

Condoleezza Rice changing the face of golf

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Condoleezza Rice’s first name comes from the Italian musical term con dolcezza -- “with sweetness.” That was how Rice played her round Thursday at Pebble Beach on the first day of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. She was all smiles and nods to the galleries, backslaps and friendly chatter with her group.

And that’s how Rice, intentionally or not, is quietly helping change the face of golf for women and people of color. She keeps popping up at golf clubs and in tournaments that were once fortresses of the white, male ruling elite.

Pity the New York Jets: Harry Reid latest with swipe

WASHINGTON — The New York Jets and their quarterback controversy have turned into Washington’s political football.

SALT LAKE CITY — Syracuse City Attorney Will Carlson is among a group of eight candidates vying for a state Senate seat being vacated by Salt Lake County mayor-elect Ben McAdams.

In Presidential matchup, NFL owners field more money for Romney

The owners of the New England Patriots and the New York Jets, squads meeting last Sunday with first place at stake in the American Football Conference’s Eastern Division, lined up on opposite sides in the political arena as well.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft has given $5,000 - the maximum allowed under federal election law - to President Obama. The Jets’s Woody Johnson not only has funneled the same amount to presidential candidate Mitt Romney, he serves as the New York finance chairman for the former Massachusetts governor, a Patriots fan.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets owner Woody Johnson says, if asked to choose, that Mitt Romney winning the presidential election in November is a bigger priority than his NFL team having a winning season.

’Tomahawk chop’ pops up in Massachusetts politics

Romney raps Obama for attacks on GOP tax plans

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama on Monday of distorting the GOP ticket’s tax policies, continuing the presidential campaign’s sharply personal tone.

“It seems that the first victim of an Obama campaign is the truth,” Romney told about 3,000 people at an outdoor rally in Manchester, N.H.

Asked by a woman about Obama campaign “lies” that claim the GOP ticket would raise taxes, Romney said, “All we’ve heard so far is one attack after another.” He said perhaps only one of the Democrats’ many TV ads is “honest.”

Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., talks with reporters while attending the Governor's Ham Breakfast at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, Mo. last week. Akin was keeping a low profile, Monday, a day after a TV interview in which he said that women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in "a legitimate rape" and that conception is rare in such cases.

Senate candidate apologizes but won’t abandon race

ST. LOUIS — Missouri Rep. Todd Akin apologized Monday for his televised comments that women’s bodies are able to prevent pregnancies if they are victims of “a legitimate rape,” but he refused to heed calls to abandon his bid for the Senate.

Appearing on former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee’s radio show, Akin said rape is “never legitimate.”

“It’s an evil act. It’s committed by violent predators,” Akin said. “I used the wrong words the wrong way.”

Calls for Akin’s exit from the race grew Monday, with at least two Republican senators — Scott Brown of Massachusetts and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin — saying he should resign the party’s nomination.
