SALT LAKE CITY -- People who leave pets tied up outside for too long or in severe weather could be in the doghouse.
The Salt Lake County Council has approved a new pet safety ordinance. The new statute allows for a warning on a first incident, but a citation and possibly a fine could result if authorities are called back to a home.
Under the rule, anyone who leaves a pet tethered for more than 10 hours in a single stretch or in severe weather conditions could be issued a citation. Tethered pets also must have adequate food and water.
The council unanimously approved the new tethering ordinance Tuesday, but two votes are required to officially make the change. The final vote will take place in January.
