Candidates file for posts in Davis

FARMINGTON -- Soon after the doors to the Davis County Clerk's Office opened Friday morning, there was a rush of Republican candidates filing to run for re-election.Within the first hour of business, County Commissioner Bret Millburn, County Treasurer Mark Altom, County Attorney Troy Rawlings and lawmakers Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield, and Rep. Julie Fisher, R-Fruit Heights, had filed to re-up as elected leaders, county officials said.

Others filing early were County Recorder Richard Maughn, County Clerk/Auditor Steve Rawlings and two familiar names returning to county politics after a long hiatus.

Scott Holt, a former Syracuse lawmaker, filed early to run for House Seat 15. Holt is being opposed by Jory Francis.

Burke Larsen also filed early to run for the Davis School Board District 6 seat.

Larsen, of Syracuse, made an unsuccessful bid for Davis County Commissioner years ago.

A full listing of Davis County candidates can be found at www.daviscountyutah.gov under the clerk/auditor link.

One notable name missing from the candidate filing list is Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. Todd Richardson, who has publicly made his intentions known that he will be making a run to replace County Sheriff Bud E. Cox. Cox is opting not to seek a fourth term in office.

Richardson was out of town Friday attending a funeral, but in a phone interview with the Standard-Examiner he said he will be filing for the office of sheriff in the next several days.

Richardson, opposed by Bountiful Police Lt. Sol Oberg, who on Friday filed to run for county sheriff, recently received a public endorsement from former county sheriffs Ken Hammon, Glenn Clary and Bill Peters, also a former Davis County Commissioner.

"It is humbling to have the endorsement of these former sheriffs," Richardson said of the support.

Those facing inner-party challenges will meet in their respective party's convention in April. If party candidates do not capture 60 percent or better of the delegate vote, the top two finishers from the convention will compete in the June 22 primary.
