Political changes galore in Box Elder

Longtime Box Elder County recorder-clerk LuAnn Adams decided months ago that she would not file for re-election this week for the position she has held since 1994. However, it wasn't until recently that she even considered another elected office. Adams announced her candidacy on March 13 for County Commission Seat B, the position currently held by Jay Hardy, who is not seeking re-election.

On a Facebook page set up for her campaign, Adams said she has "a strong foundation in county government with a keen understanding of the issues." But above that, Adams said her priority is to be approachable to the people she represents.

Adams will be running against Stan Summers, Charles W. Smith and Darwin E. Bingham.

County Commissioner Rich VanDyke, who currently holds Seat A, has filed for re-election to that position. Ryan Tingey, who was just re-elected to serve as the mayor of Willard, has also filed for Seat A.

Adams is not the only incumbent who will not seek re-election. County Assessor Monte Munns also will be stepping down. Munns has been with Box Elder County for 30 years and has served as county assessor for 23 years, and county treasurer for the last 12 years, with the positions being combined for part of the time.

"I'm just thinking it's time for me to do something different, and I don't know what that is yet," said Munns.

Three individuals have filed for county assessor: Rodney D. Bennett, Kory Wilde and L. Robert Dilley.

In February, the joint offices of assessor/treasurer and recorder/clerk were split, leaving additional offices open for election.

Shaun R. Thornley and David T. Kano, both Republicans, have filed for the treasurer position.

Chad Montgomery, Tarlton L. McBride and Kris Udy have filed for county recorder, while Marla Young and Janalee Rhodes are will be running for county clerk.

County Auditor Tom Bennett also is seeking re-election, with Thomas Kotter and Lynn J. Poulsen both filing to run against him.

Also seeking re-election are County Attorney Stephen R. Hadfield and County Sheriff Lynn Yeates. Both are running unopposed.

Three seats on the Box Elder School Board also are up for election. Incumbent Heather Young filed in District 3, as did Brett K. Merkley. In District 4, James D. Fuller seeks to retain his seat, while Laurie N. Maddock will be running against him. And in District 7, Ross T. Reeder, Angie Cefalo and Karen Cronin have filed to run against incumbent Kevin W. Packer, who is seeking re-election to the board.

Three judges will be on the ballot for retention this year: Kevin L. Nelson in Mantua; Justice Court Judge Kevin R. Christensen; and First District Court Judge Clint Judkins.

In state offices, Peter Knudsen is once again seeking re-election to the Senate, with Sherry Phipps, Richard Kent and Jeff McNeil running against him.

Reps. Ben Ferry and Rhonda Menlove are seeking re-election as well. Menlove, who represents District 1, is opposed by Don Koyle. Lee B. Perry, Becky Maddox and Douglas Beazer are all seeking to represent District 2, the position currently held by Ferry.

The list of those seeking state office may include additional names if others filed in the lieutenant governor's office Friday.

VanDyke is encouraging citizens to participate in their neighborhood caucus meetings Tuesday, when delegates will be elected. Those elected will in turn select the candidates who will be on the ballot for the general election.
