SALT LAKE CITY -- Three-term U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett is scheduled to give a news conference Thursday in Washington to outline his political future after being defeated at the Republican state convention in Utah earlier this month.
Bennett has been mulling the possibility of a write-in campaign since he failed to make it to a GOP primary. State law prohibits him from running as an independent.
To conduct a write-in campaign, he would have to file notice with the lieutenant governor's office 30 days before the November general election.
Despite polls showing that Bennett would have been the favorite to win a GOP primary, conservative delegates who dominate the Republican convention said they didn't believe Bennett was conservative enough anymore.
