Tovey named to West Bountiful council

WEST BOUNTIFUL -- David Tovey was selected from nine applicants to serve on the city council.Tovey replaces George Biada who passed away suddenly while on a business trip April 29.

Tovey's selection was announced after a short, closed session Tuesday night where the two applicants with the highest vote count, Tovey and Matthew R. Nelson, were discussed.

In his initial statement to the council, Tovey began by expressing condolences to the Biada family. He then said his decision to apply for the position came from his concern over protecting the city's interests.

"(Regarding) some of our agreements with neighboring cities, I've been disappointed with West Bountiful's share of revenues. When those things come up, I'd like us to take a good look at what our share is. Now that there's a lull (in new construction requests), this is the time to prepare (for future expansion)," he said.

Following the announcement of Tovey's appointment, Mayor Ken Romney told the audience that he and the other council members felt every applicant was qualified to serve.

Councilwoman Valerie Shaw said that stability within the city's committee membership was a key factor in the decision-making process.

"Some of you are on certain committees where we need you. Don't see it as you aren't qualified, it's that you're valuable on those committees and we need you there."

Tovey is an account executive with a Salt Lake City-based packaging company. He and his wife have five children. They've lived in West Bountiful for five years. His appointment leaves a vacancy on the Planning and Zoning Commission. He told the council he's ready to serve.

"I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and work to keep our community as great as it is."
