SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's lone Democratic congressman wants the state's Republican governor to create an independent redistricting commission.
U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson said Friday that Gov. Gary Herbert should follow in the footsteps of Matheson's father and issue an executive order creating a group to advise the Legislature on drawing district boundaries.
Former Democratic Gov. Scott Matheson created a redistricting commission in 1981. Its recommendations were largely ignored.
Jim Matheson says elected officials shouldn't choose their own voters and that the Republican-controlled Legislature is guilty of gerrymandering districts.
Herbert's spokeswoman, Angie Welling, says the governor respects lawmakers' constitutional role drawing district boundaries.
