LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan Gov.-elect Rick Snyder is naming Utah's top budget officer to be the budget director for his new administration.
John Nixon said Monday that he is leaving his job as executive director of the Utah Governor's Office of Planning and Budget to join the Snyder team.
He'll take over from budget director and former state lawmaker Robert Emerson.
Nixon will face the task of dealing with a deficit approaching $1.7 billion in the Michigan budget that takes effect Oct. 1.
Snyder says in a release that Utah has "proven itself as an economic leader" during tough budget times under Nixon.
He wants to deal with the deficit by cutting state spending and eliminating tax exemptions to deal with the shortfall. His administration must present a budget proposal by early March.
