WASHINGTON -- A senior administration official says President Barack Obama plans to nominate Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to be the next U.S. ambassador to China. A formal announcement is expected Tuesday.
Locke is the first Chinese-American to become commerce secretary. His father and grandfather were born in China.
He would succeed Jon Huntsman, whose resignation is effective next month. Huntsman is a potential Republican presidential opponent for Obama next year.
The administration official spoke on condition of anomymity because the formal announcement had not been made.
ABC News first reported the news of Locke's pending nomination on Monday.
