Utah congressman asks Obama to name US attorney

SALT LAKE CITY — Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz is requesting for a second time that President Obama appoint a federal prosecutor for Utah.

KSL-TV reports that Chaffetz has sent Obama another letter claiming the nearly 18-month delay in replacing former U.S. attorney Brett Tolman is too long.

Chaffetz says Obama should submit a name for the appointment by June 30.

Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah says there has been ample opportunity for an appointment to be made and he would also like to see a new prosecutor named soon.

Carlie Christensen is the current acting attorney for Utah but has not been formally appointed.

U.S. Department of Justice spokeswoman Jessica Smith says Christensen has filled the post capably and the office is effectively fulfilling its responsibilities.
