8 senators meet in secret on immigration reform

WASHINGTON -- The eight senators meet in private several times a week, alternating between Sen. John McCain's and Sen. Charles Schumer's offices. They sit in arm chairs arranged in a circle and sip water or soft drinks as they debate temporary workers and border security. In a capital riven by partisanship and gridlock, they are determined to be the exception and actually get something done.

Jeb Bush making play for GOP 'leader' status

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush, who has remained on the sidelines since his older brother left the White House with dismal ratings four years ago, has jumped back into the political fray this week with a new book, wall-to-wall television interviews and a round of public speaking engagements.

Will Romney's return to national spotlight be shortlived?

BOSTON -- Mitt Romney is back, if only briefly.

The former Republican presidential candidate is re-emerging after nearly four months in seclusion at his Southern California home.

Former aides describe his burst of activity this month - a national broadcast interview, a speech at a gathering of conservatives - as a thank-you tour of sorts designed to close out a lengthy political career.

His party isn't exactly clamoring for his return.

Jeb Bush: Romney's stance on immigration doomed him

WASHINGTON -- Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush writes in a new book that Mitt Romney moved so far to the right on immigration that it proved "all but impossible" for the Republican presidential nominee to appeal to Hispanic voters in the 2012 election.

Ann Romney: 'It was the media's fault'

WASHINGTON — One hundred seventeen days later, Mitt Romney still isn’t over it.

Making his first public comments since losing last November’s presidential election, Romney appeared mystified still that the country didn’t see things his way. He went on the attack against President Barack Obama during a wide-ranging interview on “Fox News Sunday,” as if the Republican hadn’t lost a beat since giving his last stump speech.

Romney felt in his heart he was going to win election

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney says his heart said he was going to win the presidency, but when early results came in on election night, he knew it was not to be.

SALT LAKE CITY — A prominent cabinet member accuses Utah Lt. Gov. Greg Bell of interfering in a child abuse investigation and undermining the agency that was handling the case.

Documents released by the Utah Department of Human Services show executive director Palmer DePaulis offered his retirement to Gov. Gary Herbert in protest.

“I am now being undermined by the Lt. Governor and I believe that he will retaliate against me,” DePaulis wrote Herbert on Dec. 17, according to documents released late Thursday.

DePaulis accused Bell of having a “personal interest” in the child welfare case.
