Feds put the squeeze on synthetic drug shipments

MINNEAPOLIS -- Federal investigators have ramped up their attack on synthetic drugs entering Minnesota and western Wisconsin, seizing more than two dozen shipments from South Carolina, Texas and Nevada, as well as several intrastate shipments, the Star Tribune has found.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which conducted the seizures, isn't talking about its investigations, most of which remain active. Jeff Long, a spokesman, said only that it's the mission of the service to keep the mail safe.

Closings of small-town post offices threaten community spirit

WEDRON, Ill. -- In September 1926, a young airmail pilot named Charles Lindbergh crashed his plane in a field on the outskirts of this Fox River town about 80 miles southwest of Chicago. Eight months later, he made the world's first solo transatlantic airplane flight.

About 16 miles to the northeast, Millington was once called Milford until the post office opened in 1861, prompting officials to change the name to avoid confusion with a Milford in a different county.

Now both tiny towns are bracing for a different brush with history. The U.S. Postal Service is considering making their cottage-size post offices extinct.

Letters mailed to and from an Army base in 1940s baffle postal officials

LOS ANGELES -- It was strange enough last month when an 85-year-old retired farmer in Iowa received a letter his brother had sent in 1943 when he was stationed at California's Camp Roberts. It was stranger still when, a few weeks later, Camp Roberts got a letter sent in 1944 to a woman who had worked at the Red Cross hospital there.

The hospital was leveled decades ago.

Postal authorities are mystified.
