Motocross race returns to Powder Mountain

OGDEN -- A mountain motocross race returns to Powder Mountain this year, bringing motocross star Jeremy McGrath along with it.

Scheduled for Aug. 19-22, the second annual Monster Energy/Powder Mountain Motocross will make the resort its home again in 2010.

Last year's event had 15,000 spectators and 1,000 entries, according to a Powder Mountain press release.

The track was designed by McGrath, who also competed last year.

An RV crash that killed one competitor and injured two other people as they left the event in 2009 had locals concerned about the safety of the steep road to the resort and the high traffic the event attracts.

Powder Mountain representatives could not be reached for comment about whether any changes have been made to increase safety, although the news release said a free shuttle will run continuously on Friday and Saturday from Wolf Creek's festival field in Eden.

An optional early practice for competitors will be held Aug. 14 and 15, with the official practice on Aug. 19.

Races will be contested from Aug. 20-22.

In the release, McGrath said, "I can't wait to get back to the Monster Energy/Powder Mountain MX.

"It was one of the most fun weekends I had all year on my motorcycle. Great track, great fun and a nice crowd ... I loved it!"

Registration is $50 per class, and both registration and camping reservations can be made online at www.powdermountainmotocross.com.

Admission to the event is $10 per person, per day, and free for children ages 4 and under.
