Are resorts overstating snowfall? / Study: 'Weekend effect' being created

WARREN, Vt. -- Ever hit the slopes only to find 4 inches of fresh snow instead of the 8 you were promised? That may be because ski areas have exaggerated their snowfalls on weekends to entice skiers, according to a study by two Dartmouth College economics professors.

OUR VIEW: Resort road won't work

The facts are clear: If there are going to be major plans for expansion at Powder Mountain -- including yearlong events and perhaps a new incorporated town -- there needs to be major changes with road access to Powder Mountain resort.

Right now, Powder Mountain road isn't up to the job. With its steep grade and close proximity to the Ogden River, it's a nightmare for drivers of heavy, large vehicles. According to a police report from Aug. 30, when a Nevada teen was killed after a motor home in which he was traveling lost control going downhill from Powder Mountain and crashed. About 20 vehicles were stopped along the road allowing their brakes to cool. Other drivers were going downhill at very low speeds. When the fatality occurred, Powder Mountain was concluding a motocross event.

Mixed reactions from early dusting of snow

OGDEN -- While Wednesday's storm brought inches of snow to the mountains, resort officials say it's still too early to start waxing snowboards and skis.

"Generally the snowfall at this time will end up melting," said Carolyn Daniels, public relations for Powder Mountain. "Then we have a later snowfall that will be the start of the base for the season."

OGDEN -- The Top of Utah's two largest ski resorts have once again received accolades from a leading industry publication as cooler weather begins to turn local minds toward another season on the slopes.

The positive publicity from SKI magazine could give a welcome boost to Powder Mountain and Snowbasin, which, like other resorts around the country, are bracing for a potentially tough season as the economy continues to founder.
