Bryson swam second in the boys 50-yard freestyle race.

Prep basketball: Lancers nab long-awaited win against Darts

LAYTON -- For Layton, it must have felt like forever ago.

'It' is the last time the boys basketball team defeated Davis and 'it' happened for the first time since the 2003-04 season on Friday evening when the Lancers dumped the Darts for their first Region 1 victory of the season.

Prep basketball: Knights inch closer to Region 1 title

LAYTON -- A shot clock would be the Knights' worst enemy.

With an effective -- some may call it boring -- half-court offense coupled with a tenacious defense, the 'Ridge is challenging for its first league boys basketball title since the 2001-02 season.

Girls basketball: Wolves wallop Knights with tough defensive effort

PLAIN CITY -- The Fremont Silver Wolves played a strong defensive game on Friday afternoon, claiming a 53-22 victory over Northridge in Region 1 girls basketball action.

The Fremont defense was impressive, holding Northridge to seven first-half points. But the Silver Wolves coaching staff came away pleased with the team's offensive performance as well.

Girls basketball: Region 5 road teams find right mix

ROY -- Faced with an opportunity to move up the Region 5 standings, the Roy and Box Elder girls basketball teams didn't get the job done at home.

Region 5-leading Bonneville went on the road and used a strong defense to clinch the league title with a 50-39 win over Mountain Crest.

The Lakers (17-3, 9-0) led at every stop, holding the Mustangs' Karlee Kartchner to just five points. Region 5 teams have one game to play on Tuesday.

Girls basketball: Martin goes off to fuel Titans' victory

SYRACUSE -- For three years running, the Titans have been the flagship of Region 1 girls basketball.

With Oklahoma State assistant coach Bill Annan in attendance, Cowgirls signee Brittney Martin splashed in a season-high 31 points on 13-of-22 shooting Thursday and state 5-A runner-up Syracuse High clinched no less than a tie for its fourth consecutive league title with a 62-50 victory over the Warriors.

Bees, Falcons take home region wrestling crowns

SMITHFIELD -- As expected, the Bees and Mustangs battled for Region 5 wrestling supremacy.

And as expected, it was a nail-biter.

And perhaps as expected, the Box Elder squad had just enough extra in the tank to rise to the top following two days of wrestling at Sky View High School.

Prep basketball: Trojans lock up Region 11 title with blowout

MORGAN -- The Region 11 champion Trojans breezed to an easy 72-50 win over the last place Grantsville Cowboys Wednesday night in a game that was never close.

Morgan started the evening with a 13-1 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 30 points in the first half and 35 in the second before calling off the dogs. A 15-0 Grantsville run against Morgan's subs late in the fourth quarter made the score sound more respectable than the game actually was.

Jake Miles drilled four 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Trojans. Colby Skinner added 11 points off the bench, while Garret Kuns and Cameron Skinner finished with nine points apiece. Kuns led Morgan with seven rebounds, while Christian Wiscombe dished out nine assists for the Trojans, who conclude their regular season next Tuesday at Stansbury.

Prep basketball: Scots top Tigers for second in Region 11

OGDEN -- Junior guard Sterling Brandley scored a game-high 16 points and three Scots hit double-digit scoring to lift Ben Lomond 62-50 over Ogden at Phil Russell court on Wednesday.

The win solidifies Ben Lomond as Region 11's second place team at 9-2 just behind the undefeated Morgan Trojans (11-0).

Boys basketball: Warriors take care of Darts

KAYSVILLE -- This time the numbers don't lie.

Weber dominated all key statistical categories and rode a strong second half to sweep the season series against Davis with a 56-42 dusting of the Darts on Tuesday evening.

At the risk of brain warp, some of the mind-numbing numbers include a 36-23 rebounding advantage and 23-of-26 from the free throw line for the Warriors. Weber held Davis to 29.4 percent from the floor and 0-of-10 from the 3-point line in the second half while shooting 69.2 percent in the second stanza from the field to finish at 50 percent for the game.

Girls basketball: Falcons hold out tourney hopes

CLEARFIELD -- Led by senior guard Mikenzey Wiberg's game-high 18 points, the Falcons picked up their third Region 6 win and kept their state tournament hopes alive with a 51-38 win over visiting Highland High on Tuesday night.

Wiberg helped Clearfield take a 24-21 lead at the half and the Falcons never looked back, keeping the Rams at bay with an 18-of-26 performance from the charity stripe.

"We shot very well on the line tonight," Clearfield coach Rebecca Packer said. "That was probably the biggest thing we did well. It was huge."

Girls basketball: Trojans finish perfect region slate

MORGAN -- It was a subdued celebration, but the Morgan Trojans cut down the nets on Tuesday night after knocking off Ogden 46-34 and finishing the Region 11 schedule with a perfect 12-0 record. The win marks two straight years of unblemished league play and Morgan's fourth region championship in a row.

But the Trojans (17-4 overall) weren't exactly thrilled with how their regular season ended. Numerous turnovers, too many missed layups and cold- and flu-like symptoms for half a dozen Morgan players resulted in a game that was too close for comfort. But the motivated Tigers had a lot to do with that.

"We've got some sick girls," Morgan coach Brad Matthews said. "Practice the last couple of days has been rough and some of them were having a hard time breathing. But that's still no excuse for bad passes and turnovers. Ogden had a good game plan. We got out of what we do partly because of what Ogden was doing."
