Davis County calls on churches to provide polling locations

FARMINGTON — For this year’s presidential election, Davis voters will have a prayer.

A wide range of church houses in select areas of Davis County are being recruited by Davis election officials to serve as polling locations to handle the anticipated onslaught of voters Nov. 6.

The county currently is making arrangements with officials of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for four church buildings, and is also working with a handful of other churches to secure their buildings for polling places. In some instances, the churches are the only buildings large enough to meet the county’s space needs in a certain area, Davis County Election Clerk Pat Beckstead said.

Santorum suspends GOP presidential campaign

WASHINGTON -- Former Sen. Rick Santorum, who shocked the political world by emerging from the back of the Republican presidential pack to pose a formidable challenge to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, suspended his campaign Tuesday.

Santorum's announcement in Gettysburg, Pa., effectively ends the Republican presidential primary season with Romney holding a sizable lead in delegates over Santorum, a former two-term Pennsylvania senator, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and Rep. Ron Paul.

"We made a decision to get into this race at our kitchen table against all the odds, and we made a decision over the weekend that, while this presidential race is over for me and we will suspend our campaign today, we are not done fighting," Santorum said.

Romney faces a daunting to-do list as he transitions into the role of likely Republican presidential nominee: raise more money, hire more people to work states critical in the fall race, hone his message for broad-spectrum appeal, while fending off GOP challengers who refuse to quit, thinking about a running mate, and refining a strategy to win the 270 electoral votes needed for the White House. Perry, still nursing wounds from his failed presidential campaign, did himself a world of good with his self-deprecating jokes at a dinner in Washington in March. First, he joked that his time as the GOP front-runner had been “the three most exhilarating hours of my life.” Then he perfectly skewered Romney by quipping that during the GOP debates, he’d been tempted to turn to his rival and ask, “Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?” (AP Photo/Chris Carlson, File)

Humor can help candidates; ouch when it doesn’t

APPLETON, Wis. — Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney on Friday defended his personal wealth amid intensifying criticism from his main GOP rival and President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, unlikely allies working to portray the former businessman as out of touch with most Americans.

Romney may look better in general election

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney looks like the weakest front-runner for a party’s presidential nomination in decades right now, one who could limp to the Republican nomination, then drag the Republican Party down to defeat in the fall.
