Students, lawmakers question value of for-profit colleges

WASHINGTON — Taryn Zychal thought she’d be working as an industrial designer after graduating from the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Instead, it’s the debt collection agencies that are working overtime, calling her nearly 30 times a day from 8:30 in the morning to 9:30 at night. The 27-year-old says she has around $150,000 due in loan payments from attending the private, for-profit university, but Zychal said she couldn’t get a job in her chosen field, and not one of her credits would transfer when she tried to switch to another school.

Big student debt could limit for-profit schools' aid access

NEW YORK -- The government is moving forward with its crackdown on the country's for-profit schools, aiming to protect students from taking on too much debt to attend schools that do nothing for their job prospects.

For-profit schools lobby to save their profits

Kevin Gilligan, CEO of a large for-profit college, has been doing a lot of politicking recently.

In recent months, Gilligan met personally with five members of Minnesota's congressional delegation and twice with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

His company, Capella, has an enrollment of 38,000 and paid $100,000 last year for lobbyists to talk to legislators and regulators.

The message from Capella, as well as for the entire for-profit college industry, has been the same: Stop new regulations that would withhold federal education loans and grants from for-profit colleges with high student debt and low student loan repayments.
