Roy gives hero's welcome to man after tour in Afghanistan

ROY — Following a grueling nine-month tour of duty in Afghanistan, Army Specialist Matt Glenn arrived home to a royal, and patriotic, welcome.

Glenn returned home to Roy on Saturday morning for a 30-day leave after serving on the front lines, where he earned a Purple Heart and several other awards for his service.

Family, friends and city officials held a special welcome-home party and ceremony for him at the Hope Community Center, where he received a special mayor’s award from Mayor Joe Ritchie, a blue star flag from the American Legion for his family to hang while he finishes his Army service, and a military service award from Melba Wahlen, wife of George Wahlen, a decorated World War II hero from Roy.

OGDEN -- Two new monuments bearing the names of nearly 200 Purple Heart recipients were installed Monday at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home and will be unveiled Friday.

‘All love and hearts’: Vietnam veteran honored with quilt

ROY — Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient Harry Malan knew something was up when his son, Ron, told him to be at the Hill Air Force Museum at 2:30 p.m. Friday, but he had no idea what.

Malan’s children and grandchildren sat excitedly as they waited for him to make the long walk through the museum for him to be honored for his military service in Vietnam.

Malan was awarded with a large, hand-made Purple Heart quilt stitched by local quilt maker Janetta Killough. Killough and her daughter unfolded the quilt and showed off the intricacies to all in attendance as everyone stood and clapped. As Killough handed him the folded quilt, Malan hugged it to him and quietly sat down.
