In 1997, the two began building and racing National Hot Rod Association Heritage Series dragsters, with the engine in front of the driver instead of behind. The two, known as team Nitro-Thunder, have won four national championships and hold the All American Fuel Dragsters world record, completing a quarter-mile in 5.56 seconds and reaching 265 mph. NITRO-THUNDER: Kaysville father, son enjoy rush of drag racing

KAYSVILLE -- Rocketing down a quarter-mile straightaway at speeds of over 250 mph is an activity Jack Harris, 68, and his son Brett, 45, do for fun.

"It's a rush; a lot of Gs," Jack said. "Boy, it sets you back and it's all you can do to keep your head from going back and hitting (the safety bars.)"

Broad Bahn wins $1.5 million Hambletonian

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Hambletonian Day belonged to driver George Brennan and a couple of trotters who provided a few surprises on the biggest day in harness racing.

Brennan guided Broad Bahn to a pace-setting 3 1/4-length victory in the $1.5 million Hambletonian for colts and geldings. His trip to the winner's circle Saturday came a little more than a half hour after the driver piloted long-shot Bold and Fresh to an upset in the $750,000 Hambletonian Oaks for fillies.

Brennan is the second driver to win the Oaks and Hambletonian on the same day. Brian Sears did it two years ago with Broadway Schooner in the Oaks and Muscle Hill in the Hambletonian.

Legacy Raceway finally in use

FARMINGTON -- Lightning, rain and wind were no match for the grit, desire and riding skills of area BMX riders wanting to be first to break in the Legacy Raceway dirt track.

After several weather delays, the track opened for practice runs on Wednesday -- despite another bout with the elements -- with about 20 riders taking advantage of the open track time.

Collmus to call Triple Crown races for NBC

NEW YORK -- Monmouth and Gulfstream Park announcer Larry Collmus is the new voice of racing's Triple Crown.

Collmus will call the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes for NBC. He replaces Tom Durkin, who opted not to re-sign with the network, citing health concerns.

Collmus has been calling races for more than 25 years, getting his start at Bowie Race Course in 1985 at age 18. He is part of NBC's revamped Triple Crown lineup.

Reflective as ever, Zito eyes a 3rd Kentucky Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Nick Zito has trained more than 1,800 winners. His horses will soon eclipse the $100 million mark in earnings. He's a Hall of Famer with an overwhelming number of awards displayed throughout his home, though he painstakingly tries not to notice any of them.

Given all that, think the thrill is waning for the 63-year-old?

Think again.

No lie: Pants On Fire on AP's Top 10 Derby list

Welcome to the Kentucky Derby, Pants On Fire. Same to you, Animal Kingdom and Twice the Appeal.

A weekend full of surprises at tracks in Louisiana, Kentucky and New Mexico has put the names of these 3-year-olds on the AP's latest Run to the Roses Top 10 list of Derby contenders.

Pants On Fire upset Mucho Macho Man in the Louisiana Derby, Animal Kingdom took the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park and 35-1 long shot Twice the Appeal won the Sunland Derby to create a minor Top 10 shuffle.

Stock-car racing experiences shifting fortunes

LOS ANGELES -- Is a sequel in store for Ricky Bobby?

NASCAR stock-car racing might well have reached its apex on a July night in 2006, not at a superspeedway but at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

It was the movie premiere of "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," a comedy producers had greenlighted after hearing a pitch of only six words: "Will Ferrell as a NASCAR driver."

Village People's Derby choice: Mucho Macho Man

Patti Reeves has a few new ringtones on her cellphone, which means she's ready to disco at any time, morning, noon or night.

"Macho, macho man/I've got to be, a macho man," go part of the lyrics to her recent download of the Village People's 1970's party-song classic "Macho Man."

Reeves has good reason to dance these days -- she co-owns Mucho Macho Man, a 3-year-old colt favored to win the $1 million Louisiana Derby in his final prep before the Kentucky Derby on May 7.

Villopoto wins AMA Supercross race in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ryan Villopoto raced to his third straight Monster Energy AMA Supercross victory and fifth of the season Saturday night, beating James Stewart in front of 60,789 fans at Lucas Oil Stadium.

"The track was really tough tonight," said Villopoto, the Kawasaki rider from Poulsbo, Wash. "The ruts played a big factor throughout the 20-lap main. You really had to be smart out there. The whole team worked together really well tonight and I couldn't do it without them."

Villopoto tops the series standings with 221 points, 26 more than Stewart.

Derby Top 10: Uncle Mo No. 1, Premier Pegasus is 6

He's a thoroughbred breeder, owner and trainer. Myung Kwon Cho wouldn't mind adding another title to his racing resume: Kentucky Derby winner.

The 68-year-old South Korean horseman looks to have a strong Derby contender in Premier Pegasus, who won the San Felipe at Santa Anita over the weekend by a record-margin 7 3/4 lengths.

A powerful move on the turn for home propelled the 3-year-old colt to an impressive victory over 1-2 favorite Jaycito in the $250,000 race at Santa Anita.

Uncle Mo big favorite in 3-year-old debut

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Leading Kentucky Derby contender Uncle Mo has been a model of comportment these past few months while waiting for his next race.

The colt willingly works out, knows when it's time for feed and rarely raises a fuss.

"He's like a big puppy dog in the stall," owner Mike Repole says.

And on the race track?

A bountiful Derby road for Uncle Mo's owner

Mike Repole raised a glass of champagne and toasted his latest Kentucky Derby contender, Stay Thirsty.

"To have one horse for the Derby is unimaginable, to have two is unimaginable, a miracle," the colt's owner said to a party of 40 friends and family members after Stay Thirsty's victory in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct over the weekend. "This doesn't come along very often, so let's all enjoy the ride."

Repole has been doing just that for weeks with unbeaten Uncle Mo, who remains No. 1 in the AP's latest Run to the Roses Top 10 Derby list. Stay Thirsty, who has been running in his stablemate's shadow, moves in for the first time at No. 6.
