Volunteers rescue golden eagle hurt in car crash

MAPLETON -- Volunteers treating a female golden eagle that was struck by car in Utah say they hope she'll regain enough of her sight to survive.

(ANTHONY SOUFFLE/Standard-Examiner) Floodwaters from the Weber River surge onto Serge Simmons Field, the former home of the Ogden Raptors, knocking down the fencing and eroding the riverbank Friday. The bicycle path on the park’s east side has also been destroyed. Because the baseball field is still in bad shape, tournaments and city recreation teams have had to find other parks in Ogden on which to play. Officials say they don’t know if the park will be restored next year because of the cost and ramifications of government regulations regarding the alteration of the river’s flow.

OGDEN -- The pain of spring flooding that sent water flowing over the banks of the Weber River is still being felt by those who have traditionally enjoyed recreational activities at Ogden's formerly pristine Serge Simmons Field.

Energy company to pay $2.5 million, replace wind turbines to reduce raptor deaths

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The largest wind energy producer in the Altamont Pass area in California's Alameda and Contra Costa counties has agreed to replace 2,400 wind turbines within four years and pay $2.5 million in a legal settlement to reduce deaths of eagles, hawks and other raptors hacked by turbine blades.

The settlement between NextEra Energy Resources, the state and several environmental groups was announced Monday by state Attorney General Jerry Brown.

One environmental leader praised the deal a model for producing wind energy while minimizing the heavy toll the whirling turbine blades take on hundreds of raptors each year.

Now Mattingly just has to convince everybody else in Los Angeles he deserves it.

Raptors rally, then take 17-10 tumble

OGDEN -- Anyone who argues that baseball is boring to watch wasn't at Lindquist Field last night.

Ogden battled back from five runs down to take the lead in the seventh, only to watch the Orem Owlz come back themselves, finally handing the Raptors a 17-10 loss Saturday night, tying the playoff series at one apiece.
