Financial terms for the deals will not be disclosed.

Trades load up MLS West with firepower

In the past week, the Portland Timbers signed Scottish Premier League all-time scoring leader Kris Boyd, the Vancouver Whitecaps traded for former MLS Best XI forward Sebastien Le Toux and the Los Angeles Galaxy brought back 2010 MLS Golden Boot runner-up Edson Buddle.

That's a lot of firepower clustered within the Western Conference of Major League Soccer.

RSL plans open house for fans at Rio Tinto

SANDY -- Real Salt Lake has invited fans of the Claret-and-Cobalt old and new to Rio Tinto Stadium this Saturday, when they will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m.

During the free-admission event, fans will have the chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at RSL's home, go back-and-forth with RSL personalities during question-and-answer sessions and take advantage of special offers on tickets and merchandise.

The RSL open house will be the best time to secure a spot at the team's 2012 home opener on March 17 vs. the New York Red Bulls, as the afternoon will include an exclusive window to purchase single-game tickets in advance of the general public sale on Feb. 1.

RSL and KTVX, along with KTVX-operated KUCW, will show 30 of Real Salt Lake's 34 regular season matches in full high-definition. The remaining four matches will be shown via national broadcast.

Beckham wants another MLS Cup

LOS ANGELES -- The Galaxy officially welcomed David Beckham back into the fold Thursday -- never mind the fact he'd never really left.

Never mind too that he hasn't finished signing the five contracts he has with the team, some of which run more than 40 pages.

Dave Checketts hired as CEO of Legends Hospitality

Impact draft Duke's Wenger with top MLS pick; RSL adds trio

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Andrew Wenger looked a bit sheepish the moment he was asked what teams and players he followed growing up. He knew his reply wasn't all that daring.

"Well, Manchester United," he said. "And, of course, David Beckham."

Now, Wenger may have a chance to play against him.

The expansion Montreal Impact selected the Duke forward with the first overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, choosing the most complete player available in the two-round draft.

The Hermann Trophy winner as the top NCAA player, Wenger was the ACC defensive player of the year last season and offensive player of the year this season, finishing with 17 goals and eight assists.

MLS will have longest season, final on Dec. 1; RSL learns schedule

SANDY -- Major League Soccer will have its longest season this year, with the final played Dec. 1.

The league announced in November that its 17th season will start March 10, five days earlier than in 2011. Last year's final was Nov. 20.

With the expansion Montreal Impact giving the league 19 teams, MLS is switching to an unbalanced schedule while keeping the regular season at 34 games per team.

Just seven games conflict with FIFA fixture dates, when many star players are away with national teams: Chicago at New England (June 1); Los Angeles at Columbus; Portland at Toronto and Houston at Vancouver (Aug. 15); Portland at Colorado (Sept. 5); Salt Lake at Houston (Sept. 6); and Chivas USA at Seattle (Sept. 8).

About 83 percent of games are on weekends and holidays, and all 323 games will be televised live.

A record nine games are scheduled for April 28.

Real Salt Lake learned the 34-game slate that will mark its eighth season of MLS play. Real Salt Lake will begin the upcoming season on March 10, where its last campaign ended - The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. - with a Western Conference Championship rematch against the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy, with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m.

NEW YORK -- David Beckham has been selected for the MLS Best XI for the first time, joining Los Angeles Galaxy teammates Landon Donovan, Omar Gonzalez and Todd Dunivant.

Galaxy heads to title match after beating Real Salt Lake

CARSON, Calif. -- As confetti and fireworks rained down on a chilly Home Depot Center on Sunday night, marking the Galaxy's 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer's Western Conference final, Robbie Keane stepped atop a hastily constructed platform at midfield, taking his place alongside Landon Donovan and David Beckham.

That's the way the Galaxy envisioned things would be when Keane joined the team in mid-August on a transfer from Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League: Keane, Donovan and Beckham standing head and shoulders above their teammates and leading the way to a league title.

Galaxy wins West final, sends RSL home for season

CARSON, Calif. -- Mike Magee scored the go-ahead goal on a pass from David Beckham in the 58th minute, and Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane also scored as the Los Angeles Galaxy advanced to the MLS Cup with a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Sunday night in the Western Conference final.

With spectacular plays from their trio of superstars, Los Angeles advanced to face the Houston Dynamo in the MLS title game Nov. 20 at Home Depot Center, where the Supporters' Shield-winning Galaxy haven't lost all year.

RSL awaits Galaxy in MLS semis

While Real Salt Lake and the Los Angeles Galaxy took wildly divergent paths to get there, both teams are precisely where many expected them to be at the start of the season.

Tonight at 7 p.m., RSL and L.A. will collide at the Home Depot Center, with the winner advance to the MLS Cup for the second time in three seasons.

"It's a good rivalry," Real goalkeeper Nick Rimando said earlier this week. "I think it all started from MLS Cup. The last four years we've been consistent with our play, and got to where the Galaxy have always been. We're their competition, I think."
