Sudden acceleration study finds problems at auto safety agency

LOS ANGELES -- The nation's top auto safety regulator is ill-equipped to detect problems with high-tech electronics commonplace in today's cars, a new government study has concluded.

Calling such shortcomings "troubling," the study called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to review its technical capabilities and appoint an advisory panel to help it handle potentially serious risks associated with systems such as adaptive cruise control and GPS navigation.

Mormons square off in Arizona recall election

MESA, Ariz. -- The strain of conservatism that propelled Arizona lawmaker Russell Pearce to a powerful perch in state politics could also prove to be his downfall.

Pearce, president of the state Senate, will face off Tuesday against fellow Republican Jerry Lewis in a recall election in their suburban Phoenix district. Both candidates are also members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a distrcit where Mormons are very active in Republican politics.

Food safety risks seem to be mounting

In just the past two months, food companies and government safety agencies have issued recalls for hamburger, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, cheese, smoked salmon, spinach dip, ground turkey and cantaloupes.

At least 13 people are already believed to have died from eating cantaloupes grown on one farm in Colorado, the deadliest outbreak of foodborne illness since 1998. That recall came just a month after Cargill launched the second-biggest meat recall in history, involving 36 million pounds of ground turkey. The salmonella traced to the meat has been blamed for one death.

Some will say these tragedies confirm all that is wrong with how food is grown, distributed and sold in the U.S. and much of the developed world. I'd argue the opposite: that the recalls prove that the U.S. food safety system works far better than most people give it credit for.

In announcing the recall of 1 million pool and spa drain covers, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said public pools with the faulty equipment should remain closed until the problem is fixed. The federal agency said it was deploying recall inspectors who have the authority to close down pools.
