Red Cross to honor heroes Wednesday

OGDEN -- During the 2012 Heroes Award Breakfast, the American Red Cross will honor community members who have displayed acts of courage and selflessness.

The breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Union Station, 2501 Wall Ave.

Roy apartment residents describe escape from blaze (video)

ROY — Residents of a 12-unit apartment building shed many tears Monday evening as they watched their homes go up in flames.

The two-alarm blaze at the Herfordshire Apartments, 4642 S. 1900 West, was reported by Roy Police Sgt. Danny Hammon as starting at 4:14 p.m.

On his way to buy shirts, sheriff's deputy spots fire

OGDEN — A Morgan County sheriff’s deputy was in the right place at the right time when a fire broke out Tuesday morning at an Ogden duplex.

Deputy Rob Taylor dropped off a prisoner at Weber County Jail on 12th Street and went to A-1 Uniforms at 134 31st St. to pick up a couple of shirts

After leaving A-1 Uniforms around 10:45 a.m., Taylor noticed smoke billowing from a duplex at 146 E. 30th St.

Red Cross calls for cease-fire in Syria

BEIRUT -- The Red Cross called Tuesday for a daily two-hour cease-fire in Syria so that it can deliver emergency aid and reach people who are wounded or sick, an appeal that came as government troops heavily shelled rebellious districts in the resistance stronghold of Homs, killing at least 16 people.

An early Wednesday fire at Versailles Apartments in Ogden caused about $25,000 in damage and forced the evacuation of 24 units. All but the tenants of two apartments have been allowed to return. OGDEN -- Just a couple of feet away. That's how close fire was to Tracy Stone's front door early Wednesday at the Versailles Apartments, 3290 Van Buren Ave.

Blood donors needed for Monday event

ROY -- Heritage Park Care Center and the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the center, 2700 W. 5600 South.

Red Cross seeking hero nominations

OGDEN -- Heroes may be all around us: family members, friends, coworkers, or complete strangers.

The Utah Region of the American Red Cross will honor local heroes who have acted bravely in a time of immediate need, or who simply display acts of heroism in day to day life. Recognition will take place during events in Salt Lake, Provo, Ogden, and St. George during March 2012, so nominations are needed now.

Beth Jensen Gibson, 91, formerly of Huntsville, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, in San Antonio. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary. HARRISVILLE -- An emergency-preparedness day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 480 W. 2000 North by the Harrisville Fifth Ward.

The entire community is invited to participate in the day's events, says spokesman David Eckersley.

Volunteers learn about possible problems when it comes to operating a shelter after a disaster

OGDEN -- Though the emergency sending dozens of Top of Utah residents seeking shelter was make-believe, the lessons learned from the mock disaster were real.

Hurricanes on the east coast have had thousands of Americans seeking refuge in American Red Cross shelters. The Top of Utah can expect a rockier natural disaster. The state is due for an earthquake as severe as magnitude 7 or larger, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

So the Red Cross held shelter boot camp exercises spanning Friday night into Saturday evening in several cities to prepare for such a catastrophe.

Eight Red Cross jackets stolen

SALT LAKE CITY -- There may be imposters in Utah posing as volunteers from the American Red Cross.

Officials from the Greater Salt Lake Chapter of the American Red Cross have discovered that eight jackets with Red Cross identification were stolen from a First Aid Station Team vehicle at the Red Cross headquarters parking lot in Salt Lake City over the weekend.

The volunteer first aid team had returned the vehicle at 12:30 a.m. Sunday after providing first aid station support for the jazz festival. The next morning Red Cross staff discovered that one of the vans had been broken into.
