National attention not always easy for LDS Church

As Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney continues his drive to win his party's nomination, Mormons worry they could face a barrage of negative scrutiny, much like that which engulfed President Barack Obama's former church on Chicago's South Side four years ago.

LDS Church views Romney's candidacy as a mixed blessing

Republicans look at Mitt Romney and see a future nominee or a Massachusetts moderate they can't support. Democrats see a formidable opponent with abundant vulnerabilities to exploit.

For one group, though, Romney's candidacy represents a unique mix of hopes and fears, pride and apprehension. Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have a lot riding on Romney's candidacy -- which is one reason why, paradoxically, they have steered clear of anything that smacks of support for the man who could become the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party.

Romney's tax returns offer a glimpse into LDS tithing

Mitt Romney's newly released tax returns provide more than an accounting of the Republican presidential candidate's remarkable personal wealth. The documents also give a rare glimpse into tithing to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by one of its most prominent members.

Romney reports he will give a total of $4.13 million to the LDS Church over two years as part of his overall charitable donations. The former Massachusetts governor reported income of about $43 million for the two years. Separately, over the past decade, Romney and his wife, Ann, have given more than $4.7 million to the denomination through the Tyler Charitable Foundation, a multimillion-dollar trust the couple leads.
