Mormon church sending humanitarian relief to Haiti

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Mormon church is sending humanitarian aid to Haiti to assist with recovery efforts following a powerful earthquake.

In a news release, the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says it will send personal hygiene kits and supplies for newborns. Efforts also are under way to determine additional needs.

The church says it will coordinate with government and relief organizations in distributing the materials.

The 13.5 million-member church has about 15,400 members in Haiti. Church officials say they are working to account for all church members. They say all those associated with a church mission program in Haiti are safe.

The church also has set up a Web address where individuals can make financial contributions to the relief effort.
