LDS stake beautifies cemetery, monument, park, road

OGDEN -- Four community areas received a face lift Saturday from volunteers with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Pleasant View South Stake.

The four areas were the Ogden City Cemetery, 2700 North road, the Peter Skeen Ogden Monument, and Wadman Park.

Church members of all ages gathered at the four locations Saturday morning to help spruce up the community.

"If you have family buried here, it's nice to have people come and take care of it," said Nicole Rogers, who spent her morning repositioning sunken headstones. "A headstone is a remembrance of you. You want it to look nice."

About 120 people gathered at the cemetery alone on Saturday, said project coordinator Scott Ballif. The group split up into smaller crews, working to clean gutters, pick up fallen branches and fruit from trees, and lift and reposition headstones.

"We've come to help clean up," said Sherma Ballif. "We're lifting headstones, doing anything the cemetery wants us to do."

Workers spruced up the areas around the Peter Skeen Ogden Monument, located at 20 N. Highway 89, so it will become a more prominent feature, while volunteers at the Wadman Park helped create walking paths, plant trees, and other landscaping, while cleanup and landscaping was done along 2700 North.

Many of those at the cemetery said they felt good about working on a project that will benefit others in the community.

"We're making it enjoyable for people to see their relatives," said Brandon Young.

Justin Rogers, who worked alongside his wife, Nicole, said he thought it was better to serve in a large group like they were Saturday to get the most done.

"It's nice to get a lot done with a lot of people," he said. "It's nice to help."
