Outdoor services start Sunday at Elim church

OGDEN -- Outdoor worship for the summer will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at Elim Lutheran Church, 575 23rd St. in Ogden.

Pastor DanaLee Simon says from now through Labor Day weekend, the congregation will gather on the lawn by the parking lot for a shorter, informal service of Holy Communion. Chairs will be provided, and trees and canopies will provide shade.

An outdoor fellowship hour with coffee, lemonade, ice water and snacks will follow the service. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the service will be held indoors.

After the worship service this Sunday, the Stephen Ministers of Elim will hold a short healing service in Elim's Prayer Chapel. Anyone who would like to be anointed and receive the laying on of hands for physical, emotional or spiritual healing is welcome.

Everyone may participate, whether actively receiving the laying on of hands or simply as a listener taking comfort in the special music provided for these services.

"Rick Givens, our music minister, has a wonderful voice," Simon said.

She also emphasized that no one needs to feel uncomfortable at any of the services. Participation is optional,- and people can experience it in the way that works for them.

Since the church began its outdoor services several summers ago, people from the community have been stopping by to listen and have a beverage as they walk through the neighborhood. And sometimes folks just sit out on their porches and "attend" the services.

"We have the outdoor services not just because of the beauty of our surroundings and weather," Simon said. "It's an opportunity to reach out in the community."

Another way the church is reaching out is by offering a larger healing service at certain times of the year.

Smaller healing services are held in any month that has five Sundays, and people have come from as far as Sandy to attend.

Simon said the church decided last summer to have a healing service as the main service on a quarterly basis. The next one will be in July.

Casual clothing is appropriate; there is no dress code.

Simon said the church is also looking forward to Vacation Bible School, which is another big summer ministry, and other programs in the works.
