Homeless man is charged with stalking LDS Church president

SALT LAKE CITY — A homeless man has been charged with stalking LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson.

Benjamin Staples was charged with a class A misdemeanor count of stalking on Friday, three days after police were called to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Church Office Building in Salt Lake City on a report of a trespasser.

Officers were told the 36-year-old Staples had been to the building about five times since June 25 asking to speak with Monson.

The charges, filed in 3rd District Court, state that on each prior visit he was told not to return to the building. Each time, he refused to leave voluntarily, choosing instead to be arrested by police.

He’s being held in jail on $25,000 bail.
