Romney turns from primaries, toward Obama

MILWAUKEE — Mitt Romney is turning away from his primary opponents and toward Democratic President Barack Obama after sweeping three more Republican contests.

In time of national trial, the brave — or stupid — step forward

“Even though Mitt Romney has regained momentum as the front-runner in the GOP race with wins in Arizona and Michigan, many within the Republican Party are ready to pull the rip cord and find someone else.”

Mitt may have Utah locked up, but he’s looking dicey elsewhere. There are more questions about President Barack Obama’s birth. It may be time to throw my hat into the ring and save the nation from the loonies.

Or at least introduce a different loon. Whatever.

GOP: Control of federal lands in Utah key to state's economy, education

SALT LAKE CITY — If Utah does not get control over federal lands within its borders, two local lawmakers worry, it could severely impact the state’s economy in the long run.

BOUNTIFUL — Spencer Thueson interns for Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, but his biggest thrill to date in Washington, D.C., was attending Democratic President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

Huntsman quits GOP race

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Jon Huntsman abandoned his once-promising campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on Monday and endorsed Mitt Romney as the man "best equipped to defeat Barack Obama"' in the fall.

The former Utah governor coupled his announcement with an appeal to the remaining contenders to stop attacking one another in television commercials. "At its core, the Republican Party is a party of ideas, but the current toxic form of our political discourse does not help our cause," he said.

He noted that he and Romney have had their differences, and he did not respond to questions when asked if he still believes -- as he said while campaigning for last week's New Hampshire primary -- that the former Massachusetts governor is out of touch and unelectable.

Romney: Touting business skills in White House bid

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Mitt Romney cruises down two-lane blacktops, past combines churning up clouds of dust harvesting corn, on his way to one more gathering, one more step on a long journey.

Four years ago, he thought these farm fields would lead to the White House. Iowa, instead, turned out to be the beginning of the end. Weeks after an embarrassing loss here, his campaign folded before the snow had even melted. Romney’s now back, more casual but still cautious, making his sales pitch: In these hard times, America needs a leader who understands balance sheets and budgets.

Chaffetz says he hasn't decided whether he'll challenge Sen. Hatch in 2012, but it appears he has his sights already set on a statewide campaign. Chaffetz, a tea party favorite who is seen as a serious threat to Hatch's bid for a seventh term, begins a series of statewide town halls Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, only one of which is in his current congressional district.

Sen. Orrin Hatch fights back against Tea Party leaders

SALT LAKE CITY — Sen. Orrin Hatch and his campaign team have heard enough from their most vocal critics and are fighting back, lambasting the leaders of FreedomWorks and the Club for Growth as hypocrites and political has-beens struggling to remain relevant.

The groups counter that Hatch's broadside is "a sign of weakness" and an attempt to shift the conversation away from past votes that may derail his 2012 re-election bid.
