Utah GOP elects owner of payday lending company party chairman

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Republicans have selected former state senator and Salt Lake County GOP Chairman James Evans as the new leader of their state party.

Evans, a former captain in the Air Force and owner of a payday lending company, was elected with almost 60 percent of the votes cast by several thousand Republicans gathered at the party’s annual organizing convention on Saturday.

 SALT LAKE CITY -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch says staffers at the Internal Revenue Service, which recently apologized for unfairly targeting Tea Party groups, "are either deliberately incompetent or they are evil."

Romney is back, but GOP reception lukewarm

BOSTON -- Mitt Romney is back, if only briefly.

The former Republican presidential candidate is re-emerging after nearly four months in seclusion at his Southern California home.

Former aides describe his burst of activity this month - a national broadcast interview, a speech at a gathering of conservatives - as a thank-you tour of sorts designed to close out a lengthy political career.

His party isn't exactly clamoring for his return.
