Tis' the season to shoplift

More than spirits are being lifted this holiday season.

Shoppers may be grabbing lots of things off shelves, but many are leaving stores without paying for them.

During the four weeks leading up to Christmas, an estimated $1.84 billion in merchandise will be shoplifted this year, according to The Global Retail Theft Barometer, a survey of retailers worldwide. That's up about 6 percent from $1.7 billion during the same period last year.

In an open letter sent Wednesday to Utah's congressional delegation, 27 companies, including the Outdoor Industry Association and internationally known leaders Petzl America, of Clearfield, and Black Diamond, Equipment, of Salt Lake City, asked the state's representatives in the U.S. House and Senate to recognize the significant value of their contribution to Utah's economy.

The companies also asked the congressmen not to support proposals to cut funding of key conservation programs and to continue protections for valuable pristine lands in Utah.

Higher prices: the big trend for back-to-school

NEW YORK -- Stores are trying everything they can think of to disguise the fact that you're going to pay more for clothes this fall.

Some are using less fabric and calling it the new look. Others are adding cheap stitching and trumpeting it as a redesign. And the buttons on that blouse? Chances are you're not going to think it's worth paying several dollars more for the shirt just to have them.

Tip for outlet shoppers: be savvy

The main draw of outlet shopping is the promise of name brands at low prices, but customers need to be savvy when they hit these stores.

Merchandise at outlet stores comes from a variety of sources and isn't always leftover product from the brands' full-price operations.
