14 dead after Islamist riots in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Clashes between police and members of an Islamic group demanding the introduction of blasphemy laws left 14 people dead and 250 wounded in Dhaka and surrounding districts.

Police in combat gear patrolled the capital while armored vehicles were stationed in the main business district, footage from local television stations showed. Streets were littered with burned tires and broken bricks.

Cars were demolished and homes and businesses were burned. Indonesian police 'used excessive force' in fuel hike rallies

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- The Indonesian Legal Aid Institute Foundation Thursday claimed the police used excessive force in handling the fuel price hike rallies staged in several parts of the country on Tuesday.

Indonesians brace for the worst amid fuel protests

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- With the wave of protests against the Indonesian government's plan to raise fuel prices expected to grow in the capital, some residents have decided to leave their vehicles at home to avoid getting stuck in tortuous traffic jams or violent street riots.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has told his troops that "now is not the time for revenge" for the deaths of two U.S. soldiers killed in riots over the burning of Qurans at an American base.

Greece surveys riot damage after austerity vote

ATHENS, Greece -- Firefighters doused smoldering buildings and cleanup crews swept rubble from the streets of central Athens on Monday following a night of rioting during which lawmakers approved harsh new austerity measures demanded by bailout creditors to save the nation from bankruptcy.

3 die in Egypt clashes over deadly soccer riot

CAIRO -- Police in Cairo set off salvos of tear gas and fired birdshot at protesters angry over a deadly soccer riot as fresh clashes on Egyptian streets killed three people on Friday, according to a volunteer doctor and health officials.

Nigeria violence escalates

LAGOS, Nigeria -- A major union representing Nigerian oil workers said Thursday it would shut down all production Sunday as part of a nationwide strike now paralyzing a country vital to U.S. oil supplies.

Riots erupt in Nigeria over gas prices

LAGOS, Nigeria -- Protesters furious over spiraling gas prices set fires on an expressway Tuesday and at least one person was killed in the violent unrest after Nigeria's government did away with a subsidy program that had kept fuel costs down for more than two decades.

In India, 31 Hindus convicted in deaths of Muslims

RAEBARELI, India -- A special court in India sentenced 31 people to life in prison Wednesday after convicting them for killing dozens of Muslims during communal riots in the western Indian state of Gujarat nine years ago.

Arrest total from British riots is around 1,700

LONDON -- British police and law courts working round the clock continue rounding up rioters that laid waste to homes and businesses throughout the country this week.

By midday Friday arrests totaled around 1,700, but a Scotland Yard spokeswoman said "that number is changing all the time."

Tourists clash with police in Spain

BARCELONA -- Hundreds of young people, many of them tourists, clashed with police early Thursday in Lloret de Mar on Spain's northeastern Costa Brava, police said.
