OGDEN -- A 60-year-old east Huntsville resident died in a traffic accident early Sunday morning.
Robert Burton died on impact when his white 1996 Toyota Tundra had a near head-on collision with a gray 2002 GMC Sierra driven by Daniel Lewis, 27, of Ogden, said Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Phillip Howell.
"It was a fairly catastrophic collision," Howell said. "Both vehicles were destroyed on impact."
Lewis was traveling eastbound through Ogden Canyon on Highway 39, when he crossed the center line and collided with Burton at about 3:40 a.m.
Lewis suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Ogden Police Department had an attempt-to-locate broadcast out for Lewis because he had expressed suicidal ideas.
Ogden Police Lt. Shawn Hamblin said Lewis had an argument with his girlfriend before the accident and made comments about ending his life. He left without making any suicide attempts at his home.
The sheriff's office interviewed Lewis at the scene and there were no indications at that time that the accident was a suicide attempt.
Accident investigators and Utah Highway Patrol took measurements and are analyzing the accident. No charges have been filed pending completion of the investigation.
The sheriff's office closed the canyon from the time of their arrival around 4 a.m. until 8 a.m., but said it didn't cause any traffic problems because it was early on a Sunday morning.
